What's not to love about an Alexa Land book? Despite the fact that she doesn't appear to have created a "named" series, this is another in an impressive list of books about gays, artists, go-go dancers, porn actors and Nana Dambruso, the over-the-top, heart-in-the-right-place, former Mafia grandmother (with a Colt 45 in her purse).These books (this one included) are sort of prototypical gay romance novels. They each feature a host of the standard memes that have become such a snooze in the hands of less accomplished authors: boy falls for boy, other boy feels unworthy, tragedy of some sort ensues, followed by the dawning of the light, love and a tear-jerking happily-ever-after.
So why is it that I give five stars to the same kind of novel that bores me to death and normally wins only two (at best) from me? Because of Ms. Land's amazing writing. First, her books are hysterical, laugh-out-loud funny, side-splitting, inventive, and always both touching and surprising. And what amazing characters she creates, simultaneously both over-the-top and profoundly moving! The word "eccentric" may have been created just for Alexa Land.
Wait until you read about Skye's attempts to give Dare "the perfect date". Each one goes more spectacularly wrong, while Dare rolls on the floor, laughing, experiencing the best time ever. The mishaps start gently with a burned Bruschetta filling the apartment with smoke and ending with Blue, naked on the fire escape while his friends (a couple from a previous Alexa Land novel), one of whom is a former Mafioso, use sissy lock picks to open the door. The next includes a bathroom leak (that includes hair dye and a blond mullet) that turns the floor and bedding blue, while flooding the apartment of the two look-alike bodybuilder/lovers on the floor below. The third ends up with animals on the loose, a fire, a fire-extinguisher and a young boy being adopted by Nana, who comes to the rescue.
I dare you to live through, with a straight face, the description of Skye receiving the "gayest drink ever" in an outdoor cafe, prefaced with a lewd serenade by the staff, and ending with photos of the drink (including its dildo straw), Skye and a condom blown up like a balloon - not to mention, the most over-the-top "meet-cute" in the history of literature.
If you don't end up rolling on the floor while reading the scene in which Nana attacks the Westboro Baptist Church-style hatemongers, you may not, in fact, be human. Skye is a sculptor who dumpster-dives for rusted junk - his preferred medium. One fun foray results in Nana helping him "liberate" a rocket-like tube (with a bulbous head on it) from a dumpster. The only way it fits into her stretch limo is through the sunroof:
"Is it just me or does that thing look an awful lot like a great big weenie dongle? I hadn't noticed it before, but now that it's jutting up in the air like that, it kinda looks like the limo is happy to see us...the limo looked like it had popped a huge metal stiffie!"
Maybe you had to be there... but that's exactly the point. You need to be there, in that marvelous, unpredictable, but oh-so-sweetly fevered imagination of Alexa Land. Do it. Buy it. Read it. You won't regret it for a moment!
P.S. I really hope the next book is about Christian, the mysterious best friend and almost-lover who claims that his life ends when he graduates and real-life takes over, turning him into a boring, conventional old man while still in his twenties. What's his secret? Who is he, really? Can't wait to find out. Ms. Land set this up throughout the book, and can't leave us hanging now! Can she?

Alexa, you've done it again. Skye is a character that embodies a bit of each of us giving us another young man to hold dear to our hearts
Beautifully written story of a gay man, an artist, a sculptor in the making at college, who indulged in finding pieces of junk, usually in dumpsters, to go after his passion of making pieces of beauty. He also was a virgin, desperate for it to be taken by asking his best friend, Christian. But being his best friend, he was turned down. He met a man online which he felt a strong connection to, each talking about some of their deepest, darkest secrets, and had told him about a job at a local club as a dancer. Mac, didn't want to meet because he was afraid of how their feelings were getting deeper for each other, so he ended there, except for exchanging their phone numbers for emergency purposes. At the same time, Skye met Dare, who at first his impression of Dare was one of a total A-Hole. When Skye went to try out for the job, one of the interviewers was Dare. Dare definitely didn't want him hired, but luckily the owner of the club did. With the beginnings of a relationship often having its bumps, this one was no different. Skye thought Dare was a beautiful dancer on stage regardless of his off stage demeanor. One afternoon before the club opened, Skye was practicing on the pole, Date tries to give suggestions, until Dare comes onto Skye which totally catches Skye off guard. Evidently the same happened to Dare because he stayed away from Skye for several days. The two finally get together. Pieces seem to fall together. Skye can't get over the fact that Mac, the one online and Dare, just might be one and the same so he approached him calling him Mac. Dare responded, not understanding how Skye knew. Dare had a horrible experience with his much older ex-lover when he was knocked down the stairs hurting his knee, ending his dream of a pro-dancing career. He didn't want another relationship, but Skye was different, someone of innocence. Dare became Skye's first...Their beautiful relationship blossoms and they seem to complement each other. The story flows from the previous novels in this series. The characters interact and grow within their family and friends. The story line is great and the characters were perfectly developed. Alexa did a wonderful job. A must read.
