From Jane Hamilton, author of the beloved New York Times best sellers A Map of the World and The Book of Ruth, comes a warmly humorous, poignant novel about a young man, his mother's email, and the often surprising path of infidelity.

Henry Shaw, a high school senior, is about as comfortable with his family as any 17-year-old can be. His father, Kevin, teaches history with a decidedly socialist tinge at the Chicago private school Henry and his sister attend. His mother, Beth, who plays the piano in a group specializing in antique music, is a loving, attentive wife and parent. Henry even accepts the offbeat behavior of his 13-year-old sister, Elvira, who is obsessed with Civil War reenactments and insists on dressing in handmade Union uniforms at inopportune times.

When he stumbles on his mother's email account, however, Henry realizes that all is not as it seems. There, under the name Liza38, a name that Henry innocently established for her, is undeniable evidence that his mother is having an affair with one Richard Polloco, a violin maker and unlikely paramour who nonetheless has a very appealing way with words and a romantic spirit that, in Henry's estimation, his own father woefully lacks.

Against his better judgment, Henry charts the progress of his mother's infatuation, her feelings of euphoria, of guilt, and of profound, touching confusion. His knowledge of Beth's secret life colors his own tentative explorations of love and sex with the ephemeral Lily, and casts a new light on the arguments - usually focused on Elvira - in which his parents regularly indulge. Over the course of his final year of high school, Henry observes each member of the family, trying to anticipate when they will find out about the infidelity and what the knowledge will mean to each of them.

Henry's observations, set down 10 years after that fateful year, are much more than the "old story" of adultery his mother deemed her affair to be. With her inimitable grace and compassion, Jane Hamilton has created a novel full of gentle humor and rich insights into the nature of love and the deep, mysterious bonds that hold families together.

Disobedience (Audible Audio Edition) Jane Hamilton Robert Sean Leonard Random House Audio Books

I am a Jane Hamilton fan, based on her first two books which were top notched. Disobedience was fun to read. I found myself laughing out loud. There was so much to like about the book but the problem was that Henry's just didn't ring true. Some have said he sounded like a middle aged woman; e.g., Jane Hamilton herself, and I must agree. This is a book that should have been written in the third person. One wonders why the author's editor did not tell her this. Today's publishers rush any book to press that is guarenteed to sell based on the author's previsous reputation. Look at 'Tis, the followup to Angelia's Ashes, for a good example. With some advice from the editor, 'Tis could have been a good book, instead it was a horrid book. And yet, I did enjoy "Disobedience" while at the same time having regrets and experiencing sadness for an excellent idea that did not bear satisfying fruit. I hope Jane Hamilton gives up on writing novels with males speaking in the first person. Her third book suffered from the same flaw.

Disobedience (Audible Audio Edition) Jane Hamilton Robert Sean Leonard Random House Audio Books Reviews

Not as good as some of her other books, Different, but almost a little weird. Probably won't read it again.
So disappointed with this novel. Have read three others by Jane Hamilton that were good, and this one was a flop as far as I am concerned.
I wasn't sure about this book at first, but it got better the further along I got. By the end, I couldn't put it down. I don't think she was completely successful at speaking as a 17 year old boy, but it was an interesting story with good characters. Worth reading.
I did not like the style or the story. It was too slow and kind of naive (the son's approach).
I have read other novels by Jane Hamilton which I liked; so I was excited to see this one. But I was very disappointed. Actually, I didn't finish the novel. It started to bog down about half way through and I didn't really care enough about the characters to finish. I just could not relate to the main character and the others did not seem real.
Ms Hamilton is one of my favorite authors and I was so pleased to see she had written another book. be sure to read all her books, you will not be disappointed. In this book the character of Henry keeps reminding me of Holden Caulfield from the Catcher in the Rye. he is trying to understand his mother, but his confusion shows when we see him referring to her as either Beth, mom,Liza38 or Mrs. Shaw. I love the character of his sister, Elvira, her independence is refreshing. poor dad, is he going to find out just what Liza38 is up to?
The selling point for me in purchasing DISOBEDIENCE was the young girl, who was a Civil War reenactor. I've always been Civil War nut, watched all of Ken Burns's PBS special, read COLD MOUNTAIN before it hit the best-seller list.
But, alas, Elvira, the reenactor, is not the focus of Hamilton's novel. There is a dramatic scene toward the end where Elvira learns it's not such a good idea to pretend to be one of the boys, but the real plot thread is Henry Shaw's "Inadvertent" reading of his mother's e-mail to her lover. She's a piano player in a group that plays antique music; her lover is a violin maker. Henry's father teaches history at the Chicago private school Henry and his sister attend. He's not too romantic. I guess that's supposed to be ironic, considering he's indirectly responsible for Elvira's obsession.
Henry, the little snoop, keeps on monitoring the course of his mother's affair.
The whole story is a flashback, written ten years after Henry read the letter, which gives Hamilton a reason, I suppose, to assume the empathetic tone toward the mother's affair that bothers me. Henry's had time to reflect; he now sees his mother as a human being with foibles and all that rot. Then there's the title DISOBEDIENCE? I don't know, maybe she intended that to be double entendre, but I doubt it. INFIDELITY would be a better fit.
