For eleven years, Kim Ndili, a goal-driven beautiful woman from a Midwest town, stood by her husband Gbenga (Binga) and held her secrets while hiding her the bruises. Her love held her family together. Her faith told her to hold on even when it meant taking their two boys and following her man to West Africa. Will honoring her vows mean dishonoring herself? She finds the strength to go back home to her Midwest town, far from Gbenga. Home where she can heal, pick up the pieces and take control of her life, but it meant being ripped from her boys. Family and love have always meant so much to her. It is a story about strength of hope, elusive but ultimately redemptive, with a cast of unforgettable characters. Torn between fear, shame and her spiritual intelligence, Kim wrestles with choices she never dreamed her family would face. Its a journey across the Atlantic Ocean to Nigeria, revealing the strength in a mother's love and the delicate but loving bonds that hold us together and ultimately push us through. Readers of BLACK & BLUE by Anna Quindlen or MIGRATIONS OF THE HEART by Marita Golden will enjoy HOLDING ONTO SOMEWHERE.

Holding on to Somewhere by W. Kay Shabazz

People always think that the most painful thing is losing the one you love, but in reality the most painful thing is losing yourself in the process of loving someone too much. In holding on to somewhere that is exactly what Kim did. She lost herself while forging a relationship with Gbenga.

Kim held Gbenga's secrets close to her heart, while praying things would change but at the same time knowing deep within her heart that they wouldn't. So after many years of abuse she makes the hardest decision any mother could possibly have to make. She leaves the beautiful city Largos, Nigeria and the people she loves most, her sons, to better herself for her children.

We often hear people say that could never be me, but when the situation presents itself then the question becomes Am I strong enough to endure what I know is coming. Holding on to Somewhere is a gripping tale of one woman's battle. Holding on to Somewhere, is a novel all of us can relate too. I recommend this to everyone, especially those in a situation where tough decisions have to be made on order to save oneself.
The reviewer gives Holding on to Somewhere 5 stars.

HOLDING OnTo SOMEWHERE eBook W Shabazz Reviews

I have not had the opportunity to come accross a book so entertaining, inspiring and enlightening in quite a while. The book took me on a journey from the United States to Nigeria and back and kept me longing for more. This book was definitely a page-turner full of emotion and suspense. This inspiring story is one that every woman, young and old should definitely read. This story embraces love, the issues of motherhood and one woman's account of abuse. I have reccommended this book to family, friends or anyone who is looking for a great book to read.
I was amazed at how quickly I read through the book! I finished it in one day- I could not put it down. Having grown up in a family with similar dynamics it was inspiring to see that there are options- you just have to be brave enough to accept them. The author did a wonderful job of telling the story in such a compelling way that you could not wait to see what happened next. I have recommended it to several friends who also loved it! Can't wait to read the author's next book!
For me, the highlight of this book was losing myself in the incredibly vivid descriptions; from visual details I could almost touch, to heartbreaking emotion. I felt as though I was on this roller coaster ride of a story along with the narrator. Also, the narrative style is unique in that the protagonist is able to forgive the worst transgressions and view the world almost without judgement. This puts more emphasis on the action-packed events of the story. In summary, It's an excellent read and a real page turner.
I started this book yesterday afternoon and finished it this morning. Once author W. Kay Shabazz hooked me, she wouldn't let me go. Like her, I fell in and out of love with her charming abuser. I can see why it was hard to leave and why her time with him spanned over a decade. I had to see how it ended. I really appreciated the picture she painted of Nigeria which gets a lot of bad press. I feel as though I was there! I also like the fact that here she was a business owner and still went through all this. This being October, Domestic Violence Prevention Month, her message throughout and at the end is powerful. Slip this book to someone you know who should read her story of triumph.
This was an excellent book. It captured my attention and I read it in one day. I highly recommend this book to everyone, it's carefully written and very emotional; I found myself laughing, crying and cheering for Kim throughout the book. While reading this book, I often felt I was actually there. I could relate to some of the things Kim went through since I myself was in a violent marriage at one time. Even though I was pleased the way the book ended, I found myself wanting to read more about Kim and was kind of sad when the book ended. I'm hoping there will be a part 2! This was the first book I bought on and I don't regret buying it. I'm Looking forward to reading more books by this author!
I was unexpectedly and delightedly surprised at the wonderful style of writing of this author. The book in itself is compelling, moving and extremely inspiring with regard to the human spirit and strength of women. I am amazed when I look back on my life at moments or situations where life unsuccessfully tried to kill me (figuratively or literally). It is comforting and empowering to realize that fellow human beings endure similarly trying experiences and persevere!!! The main character is a hero in my heart and I am grateful that she shared her story. I believe that the author once appeared on Oprah to discuss her story! This is a must read for men and women!!!
I absolutely loved this book. It took me less than 24 hours to finish. I kept turning the pages until I reached the end. It is about a woman who endures heart ache and physical pain all in the name of love. As a child, she grows up without her biological parents. As a result, she ends up marrying the first man that makes her feel like a woman. As I read the book, I felt the pain that this woman suffered from her husband. He beat her then apologized as if that was enough for her forgiveness. How many times can a person say they are sorry before it means nothing.

On average it takes a victim of domestic violence a total of seven times to leave a bad relationship before the victim leaves for good.

Our only critique it the author left us hanging. We want more. Is there a part two? Did she enter into a new relationship?

We highly recommend this book. If you haven't read it, pick it up!
